About this item
- Cast brass body and lid, unlacquered, so it darkens where your thumb sits
- Liquid-damped needle settles in about three seconds and holds a bearing while you walk
- Sighting wire down the lid window, lined up with the lubber line on the dial
- Knurled bezel in 2-degree graduations, coarse enough to turn wearing gloves
- Sprung catch on the lid and a swivel ring at the foot for a lanyard
Cast brass, hinged lid, liquid-damped needle. Unlacquered — the patina you can see turning it on the page is the finish it ships with, not wear.

Settles fast, holds true
Checked it against a plate compass on three known bearings and it was within a degree each time. The damping is the part cheap ones get wrong.

Heavier than expected
It is solid brass, so that is on me. Lives in a lid pocket rather than a trouser pocket now. The lid catch is firm and has not sprung open in a pack yet.

Bought it for the patina
Turned it around on the page for a while first. The brass is already tarnished in the hollows and that is exactly how it turned up — no surprise in the box.
